UPDATE: We have reached our goal for this project, there is further information in the next blog post. Click Here to find out more.
The Coronavirus Pandemic has been escalating at a pretty dramatic rate over the past 3 months. Going from a small outbreak in mainland China to nearly 20,000 deaths and nearly half a million infected, at time of writing (10:00AM EDT March 25th, 2020).
We have all been affected by this virus, either through the infection of ourselves or one of our loved ones, or indirectly by the shutting down of entire industries, the closing of borders, and forced/self-imposed quarantines of millions of people around the world.
I know that times are tough for all of us right now, and for some, it is tougher than for others. However, we are all in this together, and for those of us with plenty, it is time to dig deep and share with those that have not. Unless we work together to eradicate this disease from every corner of the world, we are all at risk.
The main purpose of this post is to help raise funds to provide basic personal protective equipment for frontline medical staff in the Philippines. There have been 5 confirmed cases admitted to the hospital, with one of them passing away. Unfortunately, they have not had kits to test potential cases, so they are currently putting on quarantine any person who presents with acute respiratory infections and treating them as if they are CoVID-19 positive.
The current situation at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center, in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines, which is the Center for CoVID-19 Care for all of Northern Mindanao(pop. over 5 million.) will run out of its most basic personal protective equipment by the end of this week. That means that within the next 3 days, doctors and nurses on the front lines of fighting this disease, will no longer have the proper respirators, gloves, and eye protection to shield themselves from patients who are carrying this deadly disease.
Another obstacle that we have run into is that there are no longer any medical protective equipment supplies available for purchase in Northern Mindanao, as well as many other parts of the world.
Fortunately, we have been able to locate Professional Farmer Kits, at an agricultural store in the area, which meet the protective standards to shield these medical professionals from the virus. The kits include NIOSH approved N95 Respirators, rubber gloves, and safety glasses. We are currently trying to raise enough money to purchase 300 kits for the medical staff, with each kit costing roughly $9 a piece.
Please, help us meet our goal of $2,700, so we can provide these basic necessities to the heroes on the front lines of this virus in a part of the world that needs it the most!
